Recent decades have seen major readjustments in China's agricultural sector and rural economy, continuing industrialization, and rapid urbanization. As a result, a redundant rural labor force numbering in the hundreds of millions has abandoned agriculture to enter the manufacturing and service sectors. People who used to make their living by farming are moving to the cities, where they are transformed into urban laborers and city residents.
