Hot pepper is treated as a condiment in many regions, but in Shaanxi Province a dish called "You Po La Zi" (hot pepper powder mixed with medium-hot oil), which has hot pepper as its main material, is many people’s favorite dish. The dish looks red in color, smells sweet, and tastes hot. It can be added to a bowl of noodles as sauce or used as a sort of filling for insertion into a steamed bun cut open. People in Shaanxi Province usually say that "Biang-biang noodles mixed with You Po La Zi taste great!"

Strings of hot peppers are usually hung by the door at houses in Shaanxi.
