Hundreds of film fans gathered in Beijing on Tuesday to partake in the come back of a classic Chinese film.
Occupying a significant role in the history of China’s silent films, The Goddess is the story of a single mother in the 1930s who prostituted herself in order to provide for her family.
Lead actress, Ruan Lingyu, one of the era’s four beauties, still maintains a following of fans today, because of this role. Ruan an icon of early Chinese cinema passed away in 1935, almost eight decades ago.
With the help of the China Film Archive and the KT Wong Foundation, the picture has been brought back to the silver screen.
The film’s music has been completely re-mastered and features a new musical score performed live on Tuesday by the China Philharmonic Orchestra. Audiences that gathered for the viewing held in Beijing were treated to a new version of the classic film.
