Qingdao Municipal Folk Art Theater

The Qingdao Municipal Folk Art Theater, originally called Qingdao Luju Opera Troupe, was founded in May 1960. It consists of the Qingdao Luju Opera Troupe, Qingdao Folk Music Orchestra and the Qingdao Light Music Orchestra.

Over the past 39 years, the Qingdao Municipal Folk Art Theater has developed its unique style and distinct local characteristics. It has staged 146 plays and 20 of them have been created by the theater; 186 of its artists have won prizes at municipal, provincial and national contests. Its opera Incessant Hatred won prizes for excellent repertoire and performance. Another opera Zhang, Wang, Li and Zhao won a national prize for excellent play issued by the Ministry of Culture and the Chinese Dramatists' Association. Its one-act play A Burden Too Heavy to Bear won the Golden Prize at the Sanyu Cup National Mini-play Contest. Its Villages-in-Laws won the Third Prize at the 2ndNational Mini-play Contest. Its Luju Opera Petty Official won the first prizes for performance, playwright, direction and choreography in 1996 Shandong Luju Opera Contest and also won the title as the provincial Quality Work as well as the art award issued by the Qingdao Municipality.

The theater consists of the artists like Gong Luyang, a first grade actor known for his performance in A Small Banquet and Forced to Take the Imperial Examination; Liu Xiaoming, a first grade art designer whose representative works include Zhang, Wang, Li and Zhao and Phoenix Courting; Li Yuefen, a second grade actress noted for her performance in Song of Haidi and Rainy Flower; Pan Likun, a second grade actress known for her performance in Triumph of Mu Guiying and Three Attacks on Tao Sanchun and Wang Liqi, a second grade composer known for his work Incessant Hatred and Zhang, Wang, Li and Zhao.
