The predecessors of the museum were the Storage Bureau of Ancient Relics in Rehe Province built on February 1949 and the Museum of the Summer Resort in Chengde City of Hebei Province built in 1956. The museum treasures up and displays 30,000 cultural relics, 21 important steles, more than 28,400 ancient books and records, as well as 10 stone drums with epigraphs done by Emperor Gaozong in the 55thyear (1791) during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. Besides, there are abundant historical, national, local and revolutionary heritage.
The museum mainly features eight displays of restored historical relics, namely Zhanbo Jingcheng, Sizhi Study, Yanbo Zhishuang, Yanxunshan Shop, Leshou Tang, Life of Empress Dowager Cixi, Wanhe Songfeng, and Fupian Jade. Other special displays include Qing Crafts, and Eight Banners of Qing, etc.
The museum once launched a roadshow of Daily Use Articles of Five Emperors and Once Empress in 17 large- and medium-sized cities in China.
