Universal Studios has been given the approval for the development of a Hollywood theme park in Beijing.

Chairman and Chief Executive of Universal Parks and Resorts, Tom Williams, made the announcement in the Chinese capital, saying the rise in people visiting the city creates the perfect setting for the park.

"Two-hundred-million or more tourists visiting Beijing every year sets the stage for a wonderful opportunity to share our form of entertainment with people from around the world."

The park will be built on the eastern side of Beijing, in the Tongzhou district, covering an area of around 300 acres, including a Universal-themed resort hotel.

Chinese partners for Universal Parks and Resorts are Beijing Tourism Group, and Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Company.
