Liu Yunshan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee, visited the 21st Beijing International Book Fair. He stressed that the publishing industry should establish a global vision, carry forward the spirit of reform and enhance innovation to meet people's increasing spiritual and cultural needs. It should also promote the “stepping out” of Chinese culture.
On Aug 31 Liu came to the new China International Exhibition Centre and met with the directors of local publishing enterprises and central publishing institutions. He urged that efforts should be made to deepen reform in the industry and provide a channel for foreign audiences to understand China.
He pointed out that a thriving publishing industry is needed to build a powerful cultural country. (Q: Is the following a direct quote? I’m putting it in quote marks but if it isn’t, then please take the quote marks out) “We must adapt to the new situation and endeavor to upgrade from a big publishing country to a powerful one; we must further deepen reform in the publishing system and build an open and orderly marketing system; we must promote the combination of publishing and technology and develop digital and Internet publishing; we must pay attention to the optimization of the publishing industry’s structure, transform development and improve the quality and overall level of the industry”, he said.
Liu visited the exhibition area focusing on Turkey, which is the fair’s guest of honor. After seeing the displays, he said that China and Turkey are both countries with ancient civilizations. (Note: again, this looks like direct quote. If it’s not, please take out quote marks and attribution. Thanks!) “The great Silk Road linked them over two thousand years ago. In the new era, we should co-build the Silk Road economic belt and add new connotations to this old road”, he said.
Liu Qibao, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, accompanied Liu during the visit.
The Beijing International Book Fair was co-hosted by the State Administration of Radio Film and Television of China, Information Office of the State Council, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Technology, Ministry of Culture, People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, Publishers Association of China and Chinese Writers’ Association. The fair attracted more than 2,100 publishing houses from 80 countries and regions over five days.
