The China Ethnic Art Troupe on the evening of January 2 presented a glittering cultural performance in Cambodian capital to promote cultural ties between the two countries.

The two-hour show at the Diamond Island Grand Theatre featured singing, dancing and musical performances by the "Colorful China" troupe of 40 artists from China's diverse ethnic groups.

The event drew over 2,000 spectators who are members of the Cambodian government and parliament, Chinese living in Cambodia and Cambodian people. Among the audience are Ek Sam Ol, president of the Constitutional Council of Cambodia, Tourism Minister Thong Khon, Culture Minister Phoeung Sakona, and Information Minister Khieu Kanharith.

The show, co-organized by the China-ASEAN Centre and the Foundation of Promoting Chinese Culture in Cambodia, aimed at enhancing cultural relationship between the two countries and enabling Cambodian people to better understand about Chinese ethnic culture, Wu Jinguang, deputy director general of Department of International Exchanges at China's State Ethnic Affairs Commission, said at the opening of the performance.

He said China has 56 ethnic groups, each of which has its own characteristics, forming the various and colorful Chinese culture.

"The China Ethnic Art Troupe is one of the most famous performing groups in China," he said. "Its members come from different ethnic groups in China, and many of them are prize- owners of national singing and dancing contests."

He added that the troupe has performed in over 100 countries and regions and was acclaimed as "brilliant flower of ethnic song and dance."

Ma Mingqiang, secretary general of China-ASEAN Centre, said 2014 was the cultural exchange year between China and ASEAN, and Cambodia was the first country among ASEAN that the troupe has started its performance.

"I hope that the performance will further deepen ties between China and Cambodia and enhance mutual understanding on culture between the peoples of the two countries," he said.

Li Zhigong, charg d'Affaires of Chinese Embassy to Cambodia, said the show was a good opportunity to promote the exchange of cultures between the two countries.

"This event will help further broaden cultural ties between the two countries and increase people-to-people connection," he said.

Each of the performances had drawn hearty rounds of applause from the audience on Thursday evening.

The troupe will also stage at the Cambodian Cultural Village in the tourist city of Siem Reap province on Saturday evening before going to perform in Vietnam.
