Story for Valentine's Day
Hong Kong actress Carina Lau acts with Tony Leung Ka-fai in Beijing Love Story, a city romance also starring young mainland couple Chen Sicheng and Tong Liya. Chen writes the script and directs the film, based on a popular TV drama in which Chen also plays a major role. The film will premiere on Feb 14.
Micro films aim big
Dozens of micro movie directors, producers, fans and corporations related to the industry gathered recently at Garage Cafe, Zhongguancun, Beijing, for the first BiQuu Microfilm Creator Conference. Biquu.com, a micro video-sharing website in China, started the conference as a platform for them to share information and views. The participants watched excellent micro movies from home and abroad and discussed the industry's market, creation and development. The conference also resolved that the length of a micro film should not exceed 10 minutes. "These short films can change China bit by bit and pass on great power and positive spirit. It even becomes a new type of public service," says Li Yue, who started to do charity work because of a micro movie.
Gold Pandas for drama
The 2013 International Gold Panda Awards for TV Drama were unveiled recently in Chengdu, Sichuan province. A total of 578 works from 46 countries and regions competed for the awards sponsored by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television and the Sichuan provincial government. The British TV drama Downton Abbey won the gold prize, while the Chinese TV drama Family on the Go won silver. Hopeville from South Africa won a special jury award. The best actor winner was Wen Zhang for his impressive performance in the Chinese TV drama Snow Leopard. Jiang Wenli was named best actress for the Chinese TV drama Happiness.
Hot springs forum
An international hot-springs conference will be held in Yongtai county, Fuzhou, capital of Fujian province, from Jan 8 to 10. The forum is expected to attract hot-springs operators and industry leaders from some 20 member countries of the World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy, an agency of the World Health Organization, to share experiences and perspectives on the growing industry sector. The three-day event will include presentations and open discussions on how the best operators in the world's most competitive markets build profitable spa, bathing and accommodation businesses and which evidence-based studies in bathing practices provide proof of the health benefits of hot springs. Yongtai is a place blessed with abundant hot spring resources. To date, 13 mineral-enriched hot springs have been found in the county.
