A Special Decoration in Chinese Architecture

Tile is a special decoration in ancient Chinese architecture which has a history of over 2,000 years. Tile protects the eaves of a building prolonging its life. Tile shares traits of both utilitarian and artistic characteristics. There are different types of patterns and letters on tile; decorative patterns are innovative and have aggrandizement effect. Tile is an art treasure in the Chinese civilization of more than 5,000 years.

Tsing Lung (black dragon) tile: black dragon is an imaginary animal in ancient Chinese peoples’ minds. It represents east, spring and blue. It functions to safeguard the house and prey for safety.

White tiger tile: white tiger represents west autumn and white; it functions to safeguard the house and prey for safety.

Rosefinch tile: rosefinch is a lucky bird in peoples’ imaginations which represents south, summer and red. It functions to safeguard the house and prey for safety.

Black (a turtle of God) tile: a turtle of God pattern is made of turtle and snake. It represents north, winter and dark. In China, Black (a turtle of God) tile is considered as an auspicious object to exercise and keep houses safe.
