China's art museum collections are to be the subject of a census with items counted and collated.

The Ministry of Culture completed pilot work for its implementation in eight museums in the first half of this year, putting forward a new standard with detailed requirements.

Culture departments of every province, autonomous region and municipality under the central government and art museums must create a sound organization for the project and liaison work should see one person responsible.

Institutions should establish sound and suitable plans for the census and properly arrange manpower and equipment. Those conducting the count should attend training and improve their capability.

The collection of records should be complete before Dec 31 next year.

To ensure reliability and integrity of data, art museums, provincial census institutions and national census authorities have jointly established a reviewing mechanism.
