A renewed me: my renewed sense of China
When I visited Suzhou on March 28, 2010, I felt amazed by the scene, in which modern-style and tradition-style houses are randomly located along ancient canals!
True, I saw the expected features I mentioned about Chinese architecture, but it, surprisingly, went beyond what I thought it was. More than the usual, serenity in the Suzhou Gardens was evident.
These visual wonders told me one thing: “fusion”. It is the fusion of the ancient with the modern; of Eastern influence with Western influence. Such made me realize that as we continue to traverse the path to modernity, we must not forget to remember the glory of the past as the Chinese are doing. Thus, my previous impression on Chinese arts proves to be empty. Chinese arts are foresight expressions of the future by deriving from the hindsight, that is, history. The majesty of Chinese history is also embodied by the arts. My April 6-11, 2010 Xi’an tour attested to this. Places like the Hanguang Gate, Banpo Village, Terracotta Army Museum, Huaqing Palace, Li Shan, Wild Goose Pagoda and Yan’an offered more than what I expected about Chinese arts!
