Ancient buildings in Southern China mostly adopted the column and tie construction, which used a wooden framework on the ground, and then used columns directly to tie the purline instead of the roof beams. This construction method is good in saving labor, materials and money, but it is also a test for the builders’ skill. The construction staffs supporting Sichuan’s renovation are all experienced workers selected across China.
Built by 13-meter-high central cylinders and 11-meter-high side cylinders, the framework of the cella is also now under construction.
Erwang Temple is situated on the right bank of Min River, which was initially built to commemorate the King of Shu; later, it became a shrine to worship Libing and his son and they were successively granted the titles of king by the emperors after Song Dynasty (960-1279), therefore, the later generations called it as Erwang Temple (Two King’s Temple) .
Erwang Temple suffered badly in the 5.12 earthquake. Owing to the main temple hall and the side hall were located on a slope, they have moved forward about 70 or 80 centimeters as a result of the earthquake. The pillars tilted up to 28 centimeters. Presently, the main buildings of Erwang Temple are being renovated by driving piles to prevent them from sloping.
