In the audience was Huang Lei, renowned Chinese actor and the producing director of the festival.

"Very amusing. They integrate Bollywood’s music and dance into this hilarious work of Shakespeare," he said.

Shakespeare’s works are the most staged plays in the world. Classics have their calling power, but they pose a huge challenge for directors who hope to innovate on the familiar scripts.

"I think we should immediately find out what is working, why I am attracted to the words of Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, try and see what is connected there," said the director.

Kumar is the artistic director of the Company Theatre. This is his first time in Wuzhen and he brought his wife and daughter with him.

"We came to the city, and 17 of us are completely awe-struck. It’s so beautiful here. And this girl, this little daughter of mine as you can see is taking pictures. It’s like being in a dream," he said.

Both the director’s wife and daughter perform in the Twelfth Night, which will run to Monday.
