Chinese poet Jidi Majia was one of the recipients of the 2014 Mkiva Humanitarian Awards on Oct 11. The jury called him the "defender of people's culture".

Jidi Majia, from the Yi ethnic group,is one of the most famous Chinese poets with an international influence. His poems have been translated into different languages and published in over 30 countries. He founded the Qinghai Lake International Poetry Festival, Mountain Documentary Festival of Qinghai and other international activities. These activities have become an important window for culture exchanges and international dialogues between China and the world.

The Mkiva Humanitarian Awards, which are highly influential in Africa, commemorate Richard Mkenke Mkiva, who was highly respected and recognized as an icon of the struggle against colonial oppression and apartheid in South Africa. This award is given to leaders and cultural celebrities who positively build a wide connection with the general public.

Jidi Majia is the first Chinese writer and poet and the first Asian to receive this award. "I will view this award from Africa as a way to show your amity and respect to the Chinese people, because the Chinese government and people were always on the side of the South African people when they were fighting against colonialism and power politics, until the end of tenebrous apartheid on the earth", Jidi Majia said.
