Director Wang Xiaoshuai's filmRed Amnesiais in the main competition.

Wang's films are known to reflect the microcosms in a larger environment.Red Amnesiatells a story of a retiree's life and how he retraces events that occurred four decades ago. The Chinese title ofRed Amnesialiterally translates to "intruder", which is what the protagonist recalls from his memory - a life spent intruding into others' lives and being intruded in return.

Peter Chan's film,Dearest, starring Chinese actress Zhao Wei and actor Huang Bo, is screening in Venice on the opening night.

The 71st Venice International Film Festival runs from Aug 27 to Sept 6.
