A concert series marking the birth of opera legend Mei Lanfang has just launched in the city of Taizhou in Jiangsu province, where the master was born. Some of the best known Peking Opera singer of our time were at the opening including the late performer’s son Mei Baojiu.
Mei, a Peking Opera star in his own right, is leading a team of artists on this national concert tour honouring his father. He teamed up with a young artist to sing the maestro’s most famous piece "Farewell My Concubine".
The concert, entitled "Masters Singing Popular Excerpts", truly lived up to its name, with stars including Li Yufu, Tan Xiaozeng and Zhao Baoxiu. On stage were also some young performers from the Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe, along with members of the Beijing Opera Troupe.
The Troups will head to Tianjin and Shanghai and Hong Kong and Taiwan. Next year the performers will visit the US, Japan and Russia. The concert in Taizhou also heralded the start of the Mei Lanfang Art Festival.
