"The biggest advantage is that the detectors will not get entangled with aquatic plants due to the propellers being placed in the bionic fish's tail," said Zou Mingwei, a student from Shanghai Nanyang Model High school, representing China in the final contest this year during the ongoing Stockholm World Water Week.

The Novel Robotics Fish, his project with fellow student Hu Yunling, attracted much attention. Their underwater detector -- modeled after a bionic fish -- can detect biodiversity underwater and hence contribute to improving water quality of river channels.

The detector's lower noise levels would not scare off aquatic life and thereby lead to more accurate recordings, Zou added.

Shanghai Nanyang Model High School students have participated in this contest three times and won the Stockholm Junior Water Prize in 2006. The Ministry of Environment Protection of China has encouraged such projects across the country.

One of the focus points during this year's Stockholm World Water Week is new ideas and inventions designed by youth from around the world.

This year, student teams from 29 countries are presenting projects concerning global water issues. Their hope is to win the Stockholm Junior Water Prize on Wednesday.
