2. Sheng

Sheng, a wind instrument with a history spanning 3,000 years, is widely used by various ethnic groups in China, such as the Miao, Dong, Shui and Yao. The reed in every sheng pipe vibrates to make a sound. Sheng has a wide voice register and infectious musical expression and is used to accompany dancing. It is one of the main instruments in kunqu and found in other forms of Chinese opera. Traditional small ensembles also use the sheng, such as wind and percussion ensembles in Northern China.
