Xi'an Modern Drama Theater grew out of the Northwest People's Modern Drama Troupe founded in 1953 and got the present name in 1980.
The Theater performed more than 180 repertoire of different subject matters, styles and schools, ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign since its founding. The Theater created, rearranged and translated more than 40 plays like As Brothers, Bright Mountain Flowers in Full Bloom, New Vogue of the Railway Station, Sleeping Tiger Town, Yanhe River Flows Ahead, Xi'an Accident, The Towering Kunlun Mountain, The Stories of Mao Zedong, Hard Times and The Yellow Emperor, etc.. In the play Xi'an Accident, the Theater successfully portrayed the artistic images of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De as proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation in early years, which have won the widespread acclaim from the art and literary circles and audiences. After that, the Theater created ad performed the plays of important revolutionary and historical themes like Peng Dehuai, Ballad of Yanshui River and Hard Times, which also won good praises from audiences of all circles.
The Theater received friends of theatrical and cultural circles from Japan, Canada, the United States, Britain, Germany, Norway and Italy on many occasions. Their mutual friendship and understanding were promoted through the visits and discussion.
Through many years of artistic practice, the Theater has nurtured and brought up a group of prestigious playwrights, directors, performers and stage artists such as Wan Yi, Zhang Keyao, Liu Falu, Cao Jingyang, Zhu Daoxianl, Yang Huizhen, Zhao Keming, Ma Kun, He Shuxia, You Baocheng, Gao Fei, Yan Changhong, Zou Wenlin, Li Zhijie, Li Wannian, Xu Zhengyun, Chen Shuqing, Wen Qian, You Erqun, Yan Bin and Ma Ji. This forms the Theater's actual strength in artistic production.
