‘Two-bombs and One-star Achievement Medal’: Guo Yonghuai

 

Guo Yonghuai (1909.4-1968.12), a famous aerodynamicist, was born in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province, China. He graduated from the Physics Department of Beijing University in 1935, and later got his master’s degree at University of Toronto, Canada, majoring in applied mathematics. In 1945 he received his doctor’s degree in mechanics at California Institute of Technology.

 

As a famous scientist specialized in mechanics and applied mathematics, Professor Guo Yonghuai had made an outstanding contribution to gas dynamics and its applications in China. On December 5, 1968, Professor Guo Yonghuai unfortunately died in an air accident during his returning journey to Beijing from the nuclear test base in Northwest area. He had long presided IMECH and won respect and love from his colleagues.

On September 18, 1999, the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Party, the State Council and the Central Military Committee grandly awarded 23 scientists with “Two-bombs and One-star Achievement Medal” in order to commend them for their major contributions in this respect. Professors Guo Yonghuai, together with Qian Xuesen, was among the medalists.
