Workshop on “Happy Chinese New Year” and Advanced Course for Traditional Festival Protection and Promotion will take place from Nov 28 to Dec 7. It is hosted by the International Training Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region, under the auspices of UNESCO.

In the next nine days, a series of seminars and field trips will be offered in Chaozhou and Foshan. Invited are the project directors of “Happy Chinese New Year” from the Bureau for External Cultural Relations at the Ministry of Culture, directors from the Chinese National Academy of Arts, scholars of Chinese traditional festivals from Beijing and Guangzhou and more than 30 friends from about 20 countries who have contributed to the overseas “Happy Chinese New Year” activities.

The overseas “Happy Chinese New Year” activity organized by the Ministry of Culture, other departments and more than 20 provinces is one of the most successful cultural promotions in recent years. It celebrates Spring Festival, the greatest Chinese traditional festival and presents its cultural connotations and customs through a series of activities, such as floral parades, plaza temple fairs, art performances, thematic exhibitions, folk arts exhibitions and Chinese film exhibitions.

As a vivid embodiment of the world’s cultural diversity, “Happy Chinese New Year” presents a feast of joy, harmony and sharing for countries around the world and provides an opportunity for people who share a passion for traditional culture and respect for cultural diversity. Also, the events open the way to enhancing mutual understanding and trust and promoting cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries.

The advanced course is a meaningful international seminar intended to protect customs and traditional artistry related to ‘Spring Festival’, an important intangible cultural heritage, and enliven it through the activities of “Happy Chinese New Year.” It also serves to attract more public attention on issues like cultural diversity and sustainable social development. Attendees will exchange opinions based on their research interests and experiences, give advice on “Happy Chinese New Year,” and explore issues such as the connotations and functions of traditional festival activities, protection and transmission of traditional festival culture in the context of intangible cultural heritage, and the development of Spring Festival culture through “Happy Chinese New Year.”

Participants will also take field trips to intangible cultural heritage projects in Chaozhou and Foshan to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese traditional artistry, rituals and customs. This first-hand experience will enable participants, especially the foreigners, to convey the connotations and ideas of Spring Festival in a more successful way during the “Happy Chinese New Year” activities. The field trips are organized by the sponsor with the support of Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and the Chaozhou and Foshan governments.

With rich international resources from UNESCO and support from the Chinese Academy of Arts, with its outstanding performance in cultural heritage protection, the International Training Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO is able to protect the world’s cultural diversity and serve the international intangible cultural heritage career with great strength. Since its establishment two years ago, it has made tireless efforts to put up regional and international platforms for intangible cultural heritage exchange and cooperation through a series of international training programs and cooperative activities.
