Another time-honoured tradition is the Qixi Festival, which falls on Tuesday. The seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar is widely considered to be the Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day. To celebrate, the first-ever Qixi Cultural Festival has opened at the Grand Canal Cultural Square in Beijing.

Love is in the air!

As a celebration for Chinese Valentine’s Day, one highlight of the Qixi Cultural Festival is a concert featuring love songs. From "The Moon Represents My Heart" to "The love of the Hawthorn Tree", pop stars Zhang Liangying, Hu Xia and Xiong Tianping sing some big numbers about love for the audience. One of the biggest names in the country’s music industry - Jonathan Lee, also performed, winning rapturous applause from the audience.

In addition, activities showcasing various wedding ceremonies and traditions from ancient times will be staged at the event.

Rong Dali, Organizer, said, "This event is very meaningful. It can help youngsters find out more about traditions and attract more people to pay attention to the Chinese Valentine’s day. It’s kind of passing on the tradition."

A blind date for single men and women will also be held during the Qixi Cultural Festival, which runs through August 13.
