More than 10 photographers from major Asian media were invited to shoot China’s tourist attractions starting July 25, in a bid to showcase the country’s beautiful scenery and rich culture for the world.

During the next 15 days, photographers from Asia News Network will travel through provinces including Gansu, Shaanxi, and Zhejiang to capture the beauty of China from a foreigner’s perspective.

The Beautiful China: Most Beautiful Moments of China in Foreign Eyes and Asian Photographers’ Trip to Beautiful China, was organized by China Daily and is seen as a key overseas project in 2013. It is also part of the overseas tourism publicity campaign started by the State Council Information Office and National Tourism Administration.

Zhang Yanbin, a senior official from the State Council Information Office, said at the opening ceremony that this event was of great importance, in that it not only helped China build a better national image but also added to the experience of spreading Chinese culture.

Zhang hoped that the event can help bring more foreigners to visit China to increase their understanding of it and that China Daily will make more reports about China and introduce it to the world.

Qu Yingpu, China Daily’s deputy editor-in-chief, said China Daily, as a state English media, had the responsibility to make more contributions to the publicity campaign of “Beautiful China”. The newspaper hoped to make a modern version of “The Travels of Marco Polo” through the foreign photographers’ lenses to build China’s image of both a cultural and ecological power.

Along with the “Beautiful China” kick-off, an official website was launched. Collection of the most beautiful Chinese cultural symbols and online voting for its image ambassador also began.
