Chinese painting masterpieces exhibited in London

Presenting one of the world’s greatest artistic traditions, Masterpieces of Chinese Painting 700 - 1900 brings together the finest examples of Chinese painting from the beginning of the 8th to the end of the 19th century, at London’s V&A museum.

Running from October 26 to January 19, 2014, the exhibition includes more than 70 works, from small-scale intimate works by monks and literati through to a 14-metre-long scroll painting, many of which have never before been seen in the UK. A show of this scale and nature hasn't been seen in the UK since the International Exhibition of Chinese Art at the Royal Academy in 1935, the first time in history such a large amount of Chinese objects had been on loan to a foreign country.

Apart from the paintings themselves, some items on display can help visitors gain a better understanding of Chinese art, such as seals from Qing emperors and pigment unearthed in Dunhuang, one stop along the ancient Silk Road. The exhibits are from 20 museums from all over the world, with only one third from China.

For visitors to gain a better understanding of Chinese painting, the museum has arranged many cultural activities, such as Chinese music performances and handicraft classes. At the same time, two silk scarves inspired by the paintings are on sale at the museum’s store.
