Cho Cho: A China-Australia Bilingual Musical

Cho Cho, a bilingual musical created by both Chinese and Australian artists, hit the stage in Australia. This musical was co-presented by ACPAA, Arts Centre Melbourne, Playking Productions and the National Theatre of China.

Cho Cho is an adaptation of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, produced by Daniel Kim, a famous Australian scenarist. The actually story happened in Shanghai, China during the 1930’s. In the opera, a 15-year-old girl named Qiao Qiao, falls in love with Pinkerton, an American sailor, but girl is abandoned by him by the end of the story. The story reflects the idea that people usually try to create a new world for themselves by adapting to the estrangements that exist between different social backgrounds and traditions.

Highlight: The interesting thing about this musical is that one third of its lines are spoken in a foreign language by both Chinese and Australian actors. Cho Cho is based on a classical opera, moving the historical background to China, using bilingual performances. The production will provide overseas audiences with a better understanding of Chinese culture even though they may be familiar with the plot.
