Meet in Beijing Arts Festival celebrates 13 years

The Meet in Beijing Arts Festival was launched in 2000 by the Ministry of Culture to celebrate the new millennium. Since then, over 1,000 companies and 30,000 artists from 110 countries and regions have performed at the festival, including the Bolshoi Theater, Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Shakespeare Company and Placido Domingo.

Over 60 art troupes from more than 20 countries performed some 50 indoor and 100 outdoor shows, while also hosting many exhibitions and educational events.

There are not many chances to hear Jose Carreras sing in Chinese, but Beijing audiences got a rare opportunity. The tenor performed the Chinese song My Beijing, My Home on April 27 at the National Center for the Performing Arts. A special section of the festival was the Latin American Arts Season, which showcased art from 18 Latin American countries, including Uruguay, Mexico and Cuba. The Latin American Arts Season is just one of the mini-festivals within the festival. Others include the Strawberry Music Festival, Chaoyang Pop Music Festival, INTRO Electronic Music Festival, Festival Croisement and Beijing International Women Festival.
