The Caribbean Community Pavilion celebrated Pavilion Day on July 17 with performances, showcasing the theme "Many Islands, Different Experiences."
President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo, President of Dominica Nicholas Joseph Orville Liverpool, Prime Minister of Grenada Tillman Joseph Thomas, Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng and other guests attended a celebration ceremony on July 18.
Bharrat Jagdeo thanked Expo 2010 organisers for offering the opportunity to Caribbean Community to participate the 184-day event. He especially thanked China for supporting and helping Haiti to join this World Expo.
The Caribbean Community put Expo 2010 as one of top priorities, Bharrat Jagdeo said. Shanghai's urban construction, technology advancement and culture tradition are very suitable for hosting Expo 2010 and the city fits the "Better City, Better Life" theme, he added.
The grand Expo Site was amazing and Chinese people fully demonstrated their skills and creativity, he said.
The Caribbean Community Pavilion shows the cultural diversity which the region is proud of and visitors can enjoy the region's art, fashion, dining and music, he said. Expo 2010 also offered a platform for the Caribbean Community to promote tourism, agriculture, industry and investment opportunities, he added.
Yu said that the Caribbean has beautiful scenes, warm-hearted friendly people and cultures full of passion. The Caribbean Community Pavilion exhibited a rich Caribbean ambience of tropical island scenery, a busy modern port, tasty rum and coffee and delicate handicrafts, Yu added. Visitors can enjoy the glamour of Caribbean traditions combined with their modern development, Yu said.
China and the Caribbean countries are far from each other but the two enjoyed a long tradition of friendship. Especially in the 21st century, top leaders of the two sides frequently visited each other, which has deepened political trust and brought solid interest for both peoples, Yu added.
Yu also said he hoped Expo 2010 will enable China and Caribbean countries to know each other better, deepen friendship and expand cooperation.
During the celebration ceremony, artists from Caribbean countries performed dances and singing with ethnic features.
The Caribbean Community, or CARICOM, is a regional organisation of 15 Caribbean nations and dependencies for economic cooperation. The secretariat is based in Georgetown, Guyana.
Caribbean Community Pavilion, standing at Zone C, includes: Antigua and Barbuda Pavilion, The Bahamas Pavilion, Barbados Pavilion, Belize Pavilion, Caribbean Community Pavilion, Caribbean Development Bank Pavilion, Dominica Pavilion, Grenada Pavilion, Guyana Pavilion, Haiti Pavilion, Jamaica Pavilion, Saint Kitts and Nevis Pavilion, Saint Lucia Pavilion, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Pavilion, Suriname Pavilion, Trinidad and Tobago.
