Zhoushan City is located in northeast.Zhejiang Province, to the east ofHangzhouBay and south of the mouth of theYangtze River. It is rich in marine sources, and the fertile land also nurtured unique folk art such as drum and gong music. The music has two major instruments, the Pailuo, made up of 13 gongs, and the Paigu, made up of five drums.
In the past, drum and gong music was mostly played at events like weddings, funerals,templefairs, celebrations and sending fishermen off to sea. After 1949, with the help of professional musicians, the folk music was officially given a name. At the World Youth Celebration of 1957 held in Moscow, Zhoushan drum and gongs won the World Folk Music Competition gold medal.
