Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" is one of the most popular and enduring musicals of the 20th century. The Broadway version made its debut in Shanghai in 2004, when it saw 100 sold-out performances. Now, the show is making an even stronger comeback.
The instantly recognizable music immerses fans in the classic story of theatrical revenge and true love. Nearly 10 years after his first visit to Shanghai, "The phantom of the Opera" is back.
And fans, both old and new, are absolutely thrilled.
"It's absolutely a classic story. And I love the stage design. The 'phantom' and ' Christine' sing impeccably."
Veteran Broadway star Brad Little has played "The Phantom of the Opera" more than 2,000 times, including at its debut in Shanghai. He says coming back almost a decade later has been a special moment.
"The first time we were here, the amount of flash photography was overwhelming. But I didn't see anything like that this time. I think it was a spectacle before and now it's respect for it as an art form," Little said.
The production is on its Asian tour, with Shanghai the only stop in China. The good news is that "The Phantom of the Opera" will play 64 times in the city. Yet the tickets are highly sought-after, so get a seat while there's still time.
