The third reform of Yueju opera currently challenges the traditional concept and cultural horizon of Yueju opera, utilizing updated art technologies to further explore the conventional themes and characters, contending against the increasing constraints put on Yueju opera from the realism of modern dramas. Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yueju Opera Troupe is playing the leading role in this movement, with brand new editions of the four Yueju opera classics.

Future: Unceasing exploration

New experiments and trials in Yueju opera are ongoing. Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yueju Opera Troupe and Shanghai Yueju Opera Troupe staged adapted versions of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and The Twelfth Night, respectively. Moreover, a new concept Yueju opera Jiangnan Good Man, adapted from German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan, combines the Yueju opera vocal styles with musical drama, jazz music, dance, rap music and other heterogeneous art forms. By inheriting the traditions and continuously expanding innovation, Yueju opera is heading for greater prosperity.
