Rise and decline of Huizhou in pictures

Photographer Zhang Jianping issued his new book Huizhou: Discovering a Culture in Photos on Sept 26 in Beijing. The photographic book tells the story of Huizhou-an ancient city in Anhui province and home to many famous scholars, businessmen and politicians in Chinese history. Over the past 27 years, Zhang has been taking photos of the Hui-style architecture and people living in these ancient villages. The book features about 300 photos and photographic documents Zhang collected to tell the story of the city's past and present, as well as the rise and decline of the city known for its Huistyle architects. The book is written in English and Chinese.

Charity through online trade

The Chinese local classified advertising website 58.com launched its public-spirited program "Let's play football" recently with China Charities Aid Foundation for Children. Famous football player Hao Haidong is the honorary coach. The website aims to offer football facilities to 100 impoverished schools to realize their students' sport-related dreams. Users can donate money of a random amount by trading second-hand items on 58.com. When the money reaches 3,000 yuan ($490), the website will donate items of the same value. Participants can post second-hand goods or choose to donate the money directly to charity NGOs of their choice. "The combination of a second-hand deal and charity allows more people to join philanthropic work. It's simple and convenient," says Yao Jinbo, CEO of the website.

Doctors in the house and on TV

Beijing TV will broadcast a brand new talk show featuring real doctors as hosts. Three experienced doctors working in top Beijing hospitals will share medical expertise on the weekly show through lectures, experiments and games. Beijing TV turned to the Beijing Health Bureau for help to find the three doctors, among whom Li Jianping is a Harvard graduate on heart disease, Luan Jie, a top plastic surgeon, and Wang Chenggang, a young doctor working in an emergency room. Producer Zhang Li hopes the show will make the doctors, as well as their expertise, more accessible to the massive audiences. The show, named Doctor, will be broadcast from Oct 10.
