The Forbes' World's 100 Most Powerful Women has more Chinese nationals this year. As real estate tycoon, technology magnate, or nongovernmental organization leader, these nine ladies fight on different battlefields, while changing the world together.
Different from the world's number one Angela Merkel, who shines on the international political stage, the most powerful woman in China is Margaret Chan, a medical doctor, also known as the head of the World Health Organization (WHO).
This is the second consecutive year for Chan to stand out in the Chinese female elite. Chan is followed by Cher Wang, the founder of Taiwanese HTC Corp., and Wu Yajun, the chairwoman of Longfor Properties Co., Ltd.
The Chinese first lady, Peng Liyuan, also gets a place in this year's powerful list, by ranking fifth in China and 54th worldwide.
This year's 100 most influential women were selected among 250 candidates from seven categories, including billionaires, businesses, lifestyle (i.e. entertainment and fashion), media, nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations, politics and technology, according to Forbes.
Angela Merkel, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Bill Gates' wife Melinda Gates, and the first lady of the United States Michelle Obama also top the world's list.
