The Treasures Behind the Almighty Woman

History can be beguiling, particularly when it comes to luminaries. Three decades have passed since China embraced the outside world, the truth about Cixi, China’s most powerful woman who exercised indirect and total control over the nation for almost half a century, remains plagued by a barrage of rumors and stories. Recently, an exhibition showcasing personal treasures of the mighty empress was held in Guangzhou, prompting a quaint occasion to catch a glimpse of the enigmatic woman.

Mahjong of Propitious Sheep

Born on November 29, 1835 in the Year of the Sheep, Cixi was inordinately fond of sheep, the lovely and plump animal, and even lifted its status as a holy animal, particularly in her royal residence. On her dinner table, mutton was strictly forbidden. Conversely, a considerable amount of her royal objects were named after the sacred animal and among all of them, the Mahjong of Propitious Sheep was her favorite.

Phoenix Crown

Once a pampered imperial concubine, Cixi’s notorious immersion in luxurious attire was barely a secret. The Phoenix Crown, which exceedingly enchanted the empress, was a microcosm of that fetish. It features eight Golden Phoenixes, with seventeen sparkling pearls decorated on each of them.

Apricot Silk Robe

Owing to Cixi’s preference, this kind of robe received wide currency during her reign. It was inwrought with exquisite orchid and plum blossom patterns, which indicate longevity in traditional Chinese culture. Cixi is fastidious about personal clothing. Ranging from fabric to style, every detail of the clothes needed her approval before finally coming into use.
