By plane: Dunhuang Airport is 13 km east of the city. There are direct flights from Lanzhou (Gansu Province), Xi'an (Shaanxi Province), Beijing, Urumqi (Xinjiang Province) and other cities.
By train: There are many railway lines between Dunhuang and Lanzhou, Xi’an, Urumqi and other cities. Meanwhile, you can also arrive at Liuyuan Train Station, which is 130 km from Dunhuang, and then take a bus to the destination.
By road: Buses to Lanzhou, Xi'an, Hami, Turpan, Urumqi and other cities can be taken in Dunhuang.
City transportation: Minibuses run along fixed routes throughout Dunhuang, and taxis are also available and convenient.
Climate
The best time to visit Dunhuang is from May through October.
Remember Dunhuang has a dry climate. It has three main characteristics. The first is direct sunshine. The second is little rainfall. (So evaporation may be a problem) The third is four distinct seasons. Winter and summer have huge temperature differences (annual temperature difference reaches 34 degrees). Sand storms can also be a problem in Dunhuang, with the wind sometimes reaching a speed of three m/sec.
Fine food
Noodles made from wheat flour are the main diet in Dunhuang. They are served with mutton, chicken or beef.
