Besides Crescent Lake and Mingsha Mountain, the Mogao Grottoes (also known as the Dunhuang Grottoes or the "Thousand Buddha Grottoes") is the most worthy of note.

The Mogao Grottoes is 25km southeast of Dunhuang City. It is the most complete collection of Buddhist frescoes and sculptures in the world, making Dunhuang a renowned cultural center.

After the discovery of approximately 50,000 Buddhist artworks around 1900, Dunhuang gained great fame. It was a natural for the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization to put Mogao Grottoes on its list of the world's cultural legacies worthy of special protection in December, 1987.

The murals of Dunhuang Grottoes are especially famous. They focus on presenting the images of the Buddha and Buddhist stories. At the same time, there are murals of scenery, architectures, noblemen, auspicious animals and plants. Among all the murals, Apsaras may be the most worth seeing.
