As a culture exchange volunteer, Niu Ping was assigned to Malta to teach erhu three years ago. And this year, she was invited back to Peru to share this traditional Chinese instrument for 3 months.
As a typical and traditional Chinese instrument, erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, has acquired more than 1,000 years of history in China. Niu was well-prepared and determined to introduce Chinese culture to Peru and promote culture exchanges between China and Peru. While teaching, she overcame the language barrier and other difficulties to tutor local teachers and students. After two months of study, they presented a magnificent erhu performance, which won a roaring applause from the audience.
Niu believes Chinese culture volunteers play an important role in culture exchange. It is high time that volunteers bring more traditional Chinese culture and instruments to foreigners, especially those who are interested in Chinese culture.
