Shanghai Oriental Youth Dance Troupe

The Shanghai Oriental TV Station, together with the Shanghai City Dance School, established the Shanghai Oriental Youth Dance Troupe on January 18, 1996. It is the first dance performance group to work with a television station and a new type of troupe under the control of the board of directors.

Six years after it was established, the troupe always had the consideration and support from the leaders of the municipal committee and government of Shanghai. Implicating a modern concept of the management of cultural organizations, the dance troupe attracts famous directors and produces great works; its repertoire is constantly being innovated with a new, modern spirit and different styles; and its performances are meticulous. The dance troupe has staged over 100 performances to more than 100,000 spectators.

In just six years, the dance troupe presented the grand original drama "Wild Zebra" and eight various dance shows, including "The Warrior," "Red Cloud of the Horizon," "Sky Blue," "Pastoral Song," "The Yellow River," "Yellow Loess," "The Children of Yellow River," "Mother," "Rosy Clouds," "Apple," "Tigers Wind," "Red Hat," "National Style," "Water Trickled from the Rivulet," "Female Role in Chinese Opera," etc. "Wild Zebra" was first staged at the closing ceremony of the Second Shanghai International Art Festival, which received high praise from the leaders of the ministry of culture, Shanghai government and municipal committee. The dance troupe was credited with almost all the important shows in Shanghai, such as the "Shanghai International Art Festival," "Shanghai International Fashion Cultural Festival," "Shanghai International Fashion Models Festival," "Shanghai International TV Festival," "Shanghai International Music Festival," "The 8th National Games," etc.

The dance troupe consists of 30 young and vigorous performers who study the arts diligently, working assiduously and frugally in their aim for perfection. The group won a series of awards in all previous national dance competitions.

The Shanghai Oriental Youth Dance Troupe had toured Beijing, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Ningxia, Shandong, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, Liaoning, Taiwan and Macao and also performed in the United States, Italy, Korea, Japan and Canada.

With the support and consideration of people from all disciplines, the Shanghai Oriental Youth Dance Troupe will contribute more towards the prosperity of dance and explore new ways to develop the arts.
