Established in 1960, the Sichuan Opera Theater ofSichuan Provinceconsists of a group of performing artists and top graduates from professional opera schools. Known for its well-balanced cast and elegant stage manners, the theater has gained a solid reputation in Southwest China and all over the country.
The theater has brought forward a number of repertoires during its 40-year history. Among them more than 200 are original creations, which has significantly advanced the development of Chuanju Opera. Its most renowned plays include traditional classics like the "Legend of the White Snake," newly created historic stories like "The Moon overEmei Mountain," the modern drama "A Loyal Heart in the Surging Wave," as well as folk tales like "Changing Faces."
The theater has fostered a group of performing artists of high artistic accomplishments. Among them are the "Wenhua Performing Award" and "Bai Yulan Award" winner Ren Tingfang; "Wenhua Director Award" winners Zhang Kaiguo and Liu Zhongyi; expert director Qiu Mingrui; first class stage artists Yang Chenglin and Li Shan, as well as China "Plum Blossom Award" winners Gu Xiaoqin, Chen Zhilin, He Ling, Li Sha, Cui Guangli, etc.
The theater has taken part in major cultural activities in China, including the China Arts Festival, China Opera Festival, Evening Party for theSpring Festival, and the Arts Festival for the 11th Asian Games. The theater has been invited to perform in European countries, Japan, Singapore, andHong Kong,MacaoandTaiwan, winning high praise from all audiences.
"The Scholar from Bashan," which took part in the FourthShanghai International Arts Festivalin 2002, captivatedShanghaitheatergoers, marking the first time that a local opera was performed at theShanghai Grand Theater. In October 2003, the play traveled to the Chang'an Grand Theater inBeijing, where it was regarded as one of the most celebrated works. In the same month, the play participated in the Eight China Opera Festival held in Northwest China'sXi'an,Shaanxi Province, greatly promoting Chuanju Opera with its "brilliant performances, deliberate structure and exquisite figure." The play won the highest "Cao YuOpera Award", as well as the "Excellent Playwright Award", "Excellent Director Award", "Excellent Performance Award", "Excellent Choreography Award" and "Excellent Music Award," to name a few.
