Opera and Dance Drama Theater of Fujian Province

 

 

The Opera and Dance Drama Theater of Fujian Province was founded in March 1957 as a combination of the Fujian Folk Song and Dance Ensemble and the Fujian Cultural Troupe and the Jinjing Prefecture Cultural Troupe.

Over the past 40 years, the Theater has produced and staged many plays influential both within and beyond the province. For example, dances Walking in the Rain, Colored Ball Dance and Picking Tea and Catching Butterflies were called Three Popular Dances in the 1950s and 1960s. Since the 1980s, it has presented many new productions, which have won great honors and awards for the Theater in various national and international festivals. For example, Fate, a pas-de-deux, won the second prize for choreography and first prize for performing at the 2ndNational Dance Contest. Melody Played with the Strings and Pipes, a dance drama, won the prize for best play at the National Dance Drama Festival in 1992 and a grand prize of the 3rdWenhua Award of the Ministry of Culture. Love of Minshui River, a dance poem, won the prize for best new program of the 6thWenhua Award. Citong City, Eight Allegories of Min, Spring Melody and Drops of Water and Flowing River are tunes created by the symphony orchestra and the national music orchestra of the theater in recent years. Among them, Citong City won the third prize at the Silk Road International Composition Contest in Japan. The theater has toured countries such as Guyana, Surinam, Jamaica, Peru, the U.S.A., Brazil, Nicaragua, Spain, Italy, the DPR Korea, Indonesia, Japan, France, Singapore as well as Hong Kong and Macao regions.

Major artists of the Theater include first grade composers Zhang Shuping, Wu Shaoxiong, Song Ying, Lin Rongyuan and Luo Jichao; first grade choreographers Xu Zhenchuan, Zheng Zhiguang and Weng Wenpin; first grade conductors Qiu Xiaoxu and Cao Cheng; first grade directors Yang Weihao and Xie Nan; first grade singers Yang Yiqin, Zhao Zhonghe and Pan Guowei; first grade musician Liao Zhongwei and first grade playwright Yan Tingshou.
