Beijing Peking Opera Theater

The Beijing Peking Opera Theater was established in 1979. It grew out of Beijing Peking Opera Troupe and Peking Opera Troupe of Beijing Municipality. The former one was headed by Ma Liangliang, Tan Fuying, Zhang Junqiu, Qiu Shengong, Zhao Yanxia in the list of performers. The later one was formed with a combination of schools used to be led by the four famous female-role performers -- Mei Lanfang, Shang Xiaoyun, Cheng Yanqiu and Xun Huisheng.

Since its establishment, the Theater successively performed more than 300 representative works of different schools. The newly-created works consist of  Adding the Dragon's Eyes to Bring It Alive, Sima Qian, Three Attach on Tao Sanchun, Love to the North, Appointed to be the Prime Minister, Song of Water Dragon, Sacrifice to the Year 1884, Holy and Pure Heart Kong Fansen, Yellow Chaste Tree, Flavor of Plum Blossoms, Love and Hatred in Sword-casting, The Tongrentang Pharmacy, and etc. Among these works, Adding the Dragon's Eyes to Bring It Alive won the 1stWenhua prize presented by the Ministry Culture, Holy and Pure Hong Kong Fansen won the New Drama Prize presented by the Ministry of Culture, Appointed to be the Prize Minister won the Outstanding Drama Prize in the National Youth League Joint Performance, Tongrentang Pharmacy won the Gold Prize at the 2nd China Peking Opera Art Festival, Yellow Chaste Tree won the first Peking Gold Chrysanthemum Prize. The theater had been invited to more than 20 countries as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions, where it was highly appraised.

After its establishment, the older generation artists Zhao Yanxia, Tan Yuanshou, Ma Changli, Li Wanchun, Wu Suqiu, Li Zongyi, Li Huifang, Jiang Tielin, Zhao Rongchen, Wang Yinqiu, Mei Baojiu and Li Yuanchun had played leading roles in the repertoire of the Theater. In the Creation Department, there are old generation playwrights Wang Zengqi, Chi Jinsheng, Junior Wang Yurong and composer Lu Songling, and others. As for accompaniment, there are famous Jinghu players such as Li Muliang, He Shunxin, Jung Fengshan, Yan Shouping and famous drum players such as Tan Shixiu, Liu Yuquan, Yang Zhenwu and Jin Huiwu. In the 1980s, a lot of middle aged artists showed their talents. For example, Zhang Xuejin, Li Chongshan, Zhao Shipu, Tan Xiaozeng, Du Zhenjie (aged-male character performers); Li Yufu, Sun Yumin, Yang Shurui, Yan Guixiong, Wang Yuzhen, Sun Dandu, Guan Jinlan, Ye Hongzhu, Qin Xueling, Yue Huiling, Zhao Naihua, Wang Rongrong (young female character performers), Wang Shufang, Zhao Baoxiu (aged-female character performers); Yang Shaochun, Ye Jinyuan, Ma Yuzhang (male warrior character performers); Ma Yongan, Wang Wanzhi, Luo Changde, Yao Zongru, Liu Jianyuan, Huang Yanzhong (Jing-character performers); Li Hongtu (young male character performer); Huang Dehua, Bai Qilin, Ye Jiangxing (clown performers); and others. Many of them have won China Opera Drama Plum Blossom Prize, Mei Lanfang Gold Prize, Nominating Prize, and Wenhua Performance Prize. In 1990s, the young performers Zhu Qiang, Chen Junjie, Nian Jinpeng, Shang Wei, Liu Shanli, Ding Guiling, Wang Wenzeng, Li Hongyan, Wang Yi, Zhang Dahuan, Li Shiyou and Li Hongbin showed their talents. In recent years, Wang Xinji, Song Jie, Xu Chunlan, Zhu Shaoyu and Zheng Chuanwei showed extraordinary strengths in performance.
