Director Teng Wenji

 

Born in 1944, Teng Wenji graduated fromBeijing Film Academyin 1969. Among all the others in his generation, Teng is a prominent director who constantly renews his creative angle and styles, known for his persistent contemplation and enterprising spirit.

Beginning withThe Thrill of Lifewhich he co-directed with Wu Tianming, Teng has directed almost 20 films that are full of changes in the terms of theme, content and expressing method. His works covers a very wide range on different themes including grave artistic films likeAt the Beach, Ballad of theYellow River; pure entertainment movies likeSuperstarandHurricane Operation; movies exploring human being's spiritual world likeRevivalandA Corner in the City; as well as the works reflecting reformsA Symphony of Cooking Utensils.

Ballad of the Yellow River, the music movie that describes the past lives of the people living along the old course of the Yellow River, won the Best Director Award in the 14th Montreal World Film Festival.
