Goings-on in China: Lost in Love

Many people praised the girl for her insistence on pure love, while some believed that she was asking too much. So what is the girl really looking for? What is the criterion for pure love? The answers are fuzzy, especially in a country where three decades of race for wealth has unleashed a scramble for material comforts and encroached on the traditional ideas of marriage.

Today, houses and marriage are so closely tied that many girls take houses as a prerequisite for marriage and will not choose those without a decent house or a car. With rising living costs, coupled with relatively stagnant salaries, men in China are finding it increasingly difficult to afford a marriage, or even a romantic story.

But Miss Xing’s refusal complicates the issues. Both of the male candidates are rich businessmen with a generous annual income; though different in personality, they moved to the lead with total dedication and commitment to marriage. They have achieved what it takes to be a called a success, with no obvious faults in their physical appearance and frame of mind.

The episode pushed the girl into the national limelight again and produced mixed responses among China’s Weibo users.

User 苏然-缱倦 wrote: “Miss Xing is really beautiful, and that is why so many men decided to take her away. What if she becomes not that beautiful? Will the men do what they do now?”

User 任朝选 wrote: “Some of the female contestants are not coming for their future husbands; they are seeking fame and fortune. There are so many perfect men, but why don’t the girls choose them? I think they have axes to grind."

User 心笑的感觉 wrote: “Generally speaking, I think Xing Xing is not in a position to get romantically involved. If she wants to get married now, she may skip the romantic period before marriage. She does not understand what love is and whom she should love. Find a man who really cares for her, marry him! Then she may know married life is the real love and romance, actually.”
