Goings-on in China: Heavy Money for Heavy Love?

A great majority of Chinese men expressed their frustration, saying marriage should be built on mutual affection, and should not be hijacked by money. So is true love now near extinction in China? Or does money matter much more than love for the girls and their parents who seek to improve their lives with the cash gift?

In the reaction to this materialist phenomenon, China’ Sina Weibo users joined the growing chorus of criticism.

User 狗熊马甲 wrote: “#3.3 jin Cash for Engagement#If my son finds a girlfriend who demands so many money, I will have to run away from home to express my frustration and anger.”

User 备优 wrote:“#3.3 jin Cash for Engagement#Oh, Gosh! My hometown has become so liberal with money since I left there. I thought of finding a girlfriend back at home if I fail in the city. But now it seems that I have to remain single all my life.”

User 侯云泽 wrote: “#3.3 jin Cash for Engagement# I don’t know whether it is because China is growing too fast or the people are getting more mercantile. The disease of money-worship runs rampant. The houses are tainted, Apple products are tainted, and our life and work are also tainted. Now it is marriage. What a shame and pity! How will our children view us after 30 years?
