Chinese Folk Music Goes Abroad

What are European audiences’ feelings on Chinese art? Gao Wenhou, the director of European Foundation of Chinese Music Research, has his own understanding. "We like the original traditional Chinese music, such as folk songs, especially guqin, which is like a Bach symphony to me. But most of the European audiences may hope to enjoy modern Chinese folk music." This view is the consensus among European art circles. In the view of the former Slovakian ambassador to China, "If its content and form have national character, and its spirit is modern, then the performance will be loved by the audience of every country.”

Chinese folk music needs to go abroad, but not go astray. According to Tian Qing, an expert in the protection of intangible cultural heritage, the blind faith many have in the Golden Concert Hall of Vienna is a major problem for the promotion of China’s folk music. Although the annual Vienna New Year's Concert is deeply rooted in the people’s hearts, it's not the only benchmark to measure the music success. According to Tian Qing, in recent years, our orchestra and individuals have seldom put on commercial performances at the Golden Concert Hall of Vienna. Most of the circumstances were that we bought the tickets and then presented to others.
