Hani terrace recognized as global heritage

Recently, the Hani terraced paddy field of Honghe River, in Yunnan province was identified by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as a pilot site of the Global Important Agricultural Heritage Systems, or GIAHS.

In 2002, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization started the GIAHS initiative to protect agricultural biodiversity, knowledge systems, food, and livelihood security as well as cultures.

During the past 1,300 years, the Hani terraced paddy field at the downstream area of Honghe River was gradually formed with a unique ecological system of forests, village, terrace, and water stream.

The Hani Ethnic Group who live there have also brought the agricultural elements into their rituals and customs. Examples include the Hani Agriculture Calendars and "Songs of Cultivation in Four Seasons."
