Ancient treasure discovered off Xisha Islands

Li Jilong, Archaeologist, said, "We've never found such samples of porcelain wares in previous excavations. They differ in their shape, color and pattern."

Archaeologists have discovered a rich variety of blue and white porcelain wares, including cups, bowls, bottles, pots which were decorated with various patterns.

Chen Wenbao, Deputy Director of Culture & Sport Admin., Hainan Province, said, "This discovery has filled a void, showing that there are also blue and white porcelain from Yuan Dynasty in the South China Sea. Now, we have found ceramics from all four Chinese dynasties important in their porcelain production Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing."

Blue and white porcelain is an uncommon type in Chinese ceramics. Most of the porcelain that are kept as museum pieces today are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Those made in the Yuan Dynasty are really something else.
