Xinjiang was set up as an autonomous region in Northwest China on October 1, 1955. It has an area of more than 1.66 million square kilometers, one-sixth of the total size of China and larger than any other province or autonomous region. Situated deep in the interior of Asia and not penetrated by the air currents from the oceans, the region has a conspicuous continental climate.
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is the largest administrative area in the country, covering an area of more than 1,660,000 square kilometers, accounting for 1/6 of the national land area. The region has the longest land frontier line in China, bordering the eight countries of Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, with a borderline of 5,600 kilometers.
