20100808 3rd issue, 1981 Song Qingling was the wife of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a pioneer of democratic revolution of modern China, and an outstanding leader in the women’s circle of China. Throughout her lifetime, Song has dedicated herself to the movement of women liberation and improvement of people’s life.

20100809 10th issue, 1983 The college entrance examination system was resumed in 1977 after ten years of suspension during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). That year, 5.7 million examinees took part in the entrance examination to college, marking that China returned to a right track for talent training. This cover image featured a new generation of college students taking an English listening comprehension course at a clean classroom.

20100810 5th issue, 1984 This cover image featured a mother and her son from Ewenke ethnic group from Hulunbei’er Prefecture, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. China is a country with 56 ethnic groups. As one of the least populated ethnic groups, Ewenke people are mainly distributed in Nahe County, Heilongjiang Province and Inner Mongolia. “Ewenke” means “people living in the depth of forest”.

20100811 11th issue, 1989 At age 78 this year, Qian Xuesen won the W. F. Rockwell, Jr. Medal, the world’s highest award for scientists and engineers. Qian is admired as the “father of Chinese missiles”. Thank to his outstanding work, China’s first atomic bomb was successfully detonated in Luobupo Experimental Field in west China on October 16, 1964 and China’s first missile with atomic warhead was successfully launched on October 27, 1966.

20100812 8th issue, 1990 In 1990, the 11th Asian Games took place in Beijing, the first comprehensive international sport event ever held in China. Chinese athletes won three fifths of the total gold medals at this Games, demonstrating China’s strength in the sport community of Asia. Panda “Pan Pan”, a mascot for this Games, has been remembered as an impressive cartoon image of new China.

20100813 6th issue, 1992 In the early spring of 1992, Deng Xiaoping made inspection tours to cities of south China, including Wuchang, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Shanghai. The famous “Speech of South China Tour” was made during this historic visit, which set a freer social environment for China’s reform and opening and played a key role in speeding up the economic reform and social progress of China in the 1990s.

20100814 1st issue, 1993 China Pictorial’s first issue in 1993 featured Gong Li, a then emerging Chinese film actress. Today, Gong Li has become a world famous film star and a representative of Chinese film.

20100815 10th issue, 1994 In March 1993, Jiang Zemin was elected President of the People’s Republic of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission at the 8th National People’s Congress. Deng Xiaoping shook hands with him, fully expressing their trust with each other and confidence about China’s future. 20100816 6th issue, 1995 Yang Liping, dubbed as a “God of Dance” from Bai ethnic group, is celebrated as China’s most famous dancer who choreographed the classic dance “Soul of Peacock”. In 1992, she made a dance tour to Taiwan, becoming the first Mainland dancer ever performing in this island.

20100817 10th issue, 1997 On July 1, 1997, China resumed its exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong. The return of Hong Kong to the motherland was considered a landmark in China’s endeavors to achieve peaceful reunification. On that evening, Chinese people from all ethnic groups gathered to celebrate this jovial event in Beijing.

20100818 1st issue, 2000 On the midnight of December 19, 1999, the ceremony for the transfer of sovereignty of Macao between China and Portugal was taking place at the brilliantly illuminated Macao Culture Center’s Grand Auditorium. Since then, the Chinese Government has resumed its exercise of sovereignty over Macao. On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong returned to China.
