During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s July visit to Latin America, Argentine Vice President Boudou presented to President Xi a No. 10 soccer team jersey with Xi’s name printed on it. Later, President Xi also sent national presents to Argentine friends. Surprisingly, the gift list to Latin America included a set of DVDs: two works directed by Zhao Baogang — Beijing Youth and To Elderly With Love. Another was the film, Love is Not Blind, directed by Teng Huatao. Reporters said the theme was selected to reflect the state of contemporary youth in these works.

President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Tanzania last March. He mentioned the Chinese drama “Beautiful Daughter-in-Law”, which became hit in Tanzania. Audiences can understand the sweet and bitter of life in China. TV dramas became the “national giftware” for the first time for Latin America, making traditional gifts such as silk, china, paintings and other works of art more meaningful and opening a window for foreign friends to understand China.

These Chinese-dubbed TV dramas have subtitles in Chinese, English, Spanish and Portuguese. When asked whether he is worried about its popularity, Teng Huatao said with a smile: “I have never thought about this matter, I just feel honored to have my work to be chosen as ‘national giftware’.”

Beijing Youth tells the story of four young people in Beijing with different personalities who come from different families and backgrounds, as they fight for their dreams and love. To Elderly with Love” has 41 episodes. It focuses on the social issues of aging in China, depicting how the one-child generation is taking on the responsibility of supporting the elderly and working under pressure. It shows the Chinese people’s strong affection and filial piety. The movie Love is Not Blind shows the younger generation’s attitude towards love by describing a Chinese girl’s comedic journey to heal the lovesick.

Zhao Baogang said, “Our national leaders are going out with contemporary cultural products, showing the initiative to promote the internationalization of cultural industry. After all, it is difficult for our domestic film and television products to go global.”
